margao:PONDA: Ponda police have been alerted following an attack on senior communist leader Govind Pansare and his wife Uma in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, on Monday morning.

Sources said that the Maharashtra police informed the Goa police that the assailants may take shelter somewhere in Ponda taluka or neighbouring areas. A team of the Maharashtra police is expected to arrive in the state.

Govind was on his morning walk with his wife when two men, riding a motorcycle, fired shots at them. Both collapsed and were taken to a nearby private hospital.

Late evening, there were speculations that a person was taken in for questioning, but they were later dismissed as rumours.

This is the third such incident in Maharashtra after RTI activist Satish Shetty and activist Narendra Dabholkar were both shot dead by gunmen in Pune. Police have found similarities between this case and the Dabolkar one
